Electric arc furnace steelmaking requirements for raw material scrap steel

Electric arc furnace steelmaking requirements

The main material of electric furnace steelmaking is scrap steel. The quality of scrap steel is directly related to the quality, cost and productivity of steelmaking. Therefore, there are some basic requirements for scrap steel, such as:

1.The surface of scrap steel should be clean and less rusty.

Debris such as sand on scrap steel will reduce the conductivity of the furnace, extend the melting time, affect the dephosphorization effect of the oxidizer and corrode the furnace. If the scrap steel is severely rusted or stained with oil, it will reduce the yield of steel and alloying elements and increase the hydrogen content of the steel.

2.Scrap steel cannot contain lead, tin, arsenic, zinc, copper and other non-ferrous metals.

Lead has a high density, low melting point, and is insoluble in molten steel. It is easy to deposit in the gaps at the bottom of the furnace and cause water leakage. In addition, Tin, arsenic, and copper can easily cause brittleness of steel.

3.Scrap steel cannot be mixed with airtight containers, flammable and explosive substances, and toxic to ensure safe production.

4. The scrap chemical composition must be clear, and the yellow phosphorus content must not be too high.

5. The scrap shape cannot be too large.

Pig iron is generally used to increase the amount of charge in electric furnace steelmaking, and the amount of charge usually does not exceed 30% of the charge.
